Boosting Young Fruit Trees: Vegan-Friendly Fertiliser options
As sustainable and ethical agricultural practices gain traction, more of our customers are seeking alternatives to traditional fertilisers—particularly those that avoid animal-derived ingredients like blood and bone meal. Recently, a customer asked us about the best fertilisers to help young fruit trees thrive without using any animal-based products. Here are the vegan-friendly options we recommended, which are also suitable for other fruit and vegetable plants:
- BioTreat Lawn, Fruit & Veggie NPK Fertiliser: A traditional NPK fertiliser enriched with plant-based organic materials like humates and fulvates, along with seaweed. It’s popular for fruit trees and works well on lawns too.
- BioTreat K-Mate Potassium Humate: A BioGro approved product made from humic acid and potassium humate, containing around 15% fulvic acid.
- Seaweed Treat Extract Flakes: These concentrated seaweed flakes dissolve in water and can be applied as a liquid foliar spray. Application rates are available in the brochure on our website. This product is also BioGro approved.
- Nitrosol EcoGro: A plant-based liquid fertiliser with an 11-5-9 ratio, boosted with trace minerals. Please note that this product is currently only available in 20L packs.
- BioTreat Fertiliser Tablets: If you’re planting new trees, drop a couple of these tablets into each planting hole for long-term, slow-release nutrition. These are widely used in nurseries and forestry.
Any of these options would meet your needs, and in most cases, they can even be mixed for enhanced results.

A wetter helps spray droplets spread across a leaf and stay there, instead of beading up and rolling off before the herbicide gets in. Use a non-ionic wetter for everyday spraying, and step up to an organosilicone wetter for waxy, hairy, dusty or stressed weeds. Spring is the only time of year a wasp queen is on her own. She's out of hibernation, building a small nest by herself and feeding her first larvae with no workers to back her up. Catch her now and that nest never forms, which means no colony of thousands and no new queens next autumn.
