Picloram gel for use on woody shrubs

Contains:  43g/L Picloram as the potassium salt

Targetted effective and convenient weed control designed for weeds that respond best to picloram. Great also if you wish to avoid products containing glyphosate.  Because of the way it is used it is extremely eco-friendly and is used regularly by contractors, environmental groups and many councils.

Similar or equivalent to:

• Vigilant Gel (1)- the original well-know Vigilant Gel was the same active ingredient and strength.  This has now been replaced by Vigilant II Gel
• Triumph Gel (2) 
• Buckshot (3)- Rainbow & Brown's granular picloram 20g/kg.  A different method of application and strength but also not sprayed on.
• Tordon 2G (4) - Again a 20g/kg picloram which is applied dry so while not the same it is similar in that this applied directly to the weed.

Specifically reformulated from a clear gel to a  coloured gel (usually green or blue) to make it more visible when being used.  The colour is absorbed and not noticed within a day or so of application.  Some of the pictures of the the product in use might still show the old clear gel. 

Why Use Cut'n'Paste Picloram Weed Killing Gel?

As always, a stump and stem paste that is safe and easy to use and a highly targeted way to deal with weeds that respond well to picloram. Great for those wanting to avoid Glyphosate products.

Directions for Use - Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel

For trees, shrubs, woody weeds and vines

1. Cut the weed down near the ground.
2. Take your bottle of Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel,  hold it upside down and gently squeeze a layer of Picloram paste about 3mm thick onto the whole surface of the cut stem or stump from the edge to the centre.  The herbicide is drawn into the root system of the weed.  If the stump width is more than around 150mm cut a series of 20mm deep blazes around the main trunk using a pruning saw or axe.  Apply a 4-5mm thick coating of Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel.  With multi stem plants make sure at least 8-% of the stems are treated and especially the main stems.
3. Leave it to die off.  Should any regrowth appear simply re-treat.

For the best effects paste the Picloram herbicide gel onto the cut stems or stumps immediately after cutting.

For Use on Weeds with Rhizomes.

1. For weeds like agapanthus and Kahili ginger.  Cut the shoots at the rhizome.
2. Hold the bottle of Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel upside down, squeeze gently and apply 4-5mm thick coating on the cut surface.  For Kahili ginger do the same but where there are more than 4 rhizomes between shoots drill a 10-12mm hole into every 3rd or 4th rhizome from a shoot.  The hole should be 70-90% of the depth of the rhizome.  Fill this hole with Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel.
3. Leave it to die off.  

For Use on Broadleaf Weeds

1. Put your boot into the weed and then apply about a 3-5mm thick drop about 20mm in diameter into the centre of the weed
2. Leave it to die off.

Weeds Controlled by Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel

Barberry, broom, buddleia, gorse, hawthorn, matagouri, wilding pine, privet, sweet briar, tutu, wattle, willow, woolly nightshade, greater bindweed, Himalayan honeysuckle, Japanese honeysuckle, Ivy, Old Man's Beard, Kahili Ginger, agapanthus, Wandering Jew and many general broadleaf weeds, scrambling weeds, climbing weeds and rhizomatous weeds.

Handling and Precautions

The active ingredient, picloram, is ground residual and can travel through soil, particularly when large numbers of weeds are treated. The mode of action of the pyridine group of herbicides is to disrupt cell growth; some weeds may be resistant to these chemicals.

You are advised not to use next to desirable or known sensitive native plants or in areas where their roots might extend into. Do not use if rain is expected with 2 hours. The active ingredient from the gel can leach onto wanted plants. Effectiveness may also be reduced.

Common Questions about Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel

How long does it take for the gel to be absorbed into the cut stem?

It depends on the time and the weather.  When it is warm and sunny the Cut'n'Paste Picloram gets absorbed in up to 4 hours.  When it is a bit cooler or the weeds are in damp or sheltered conditions then it can take a few days.  

What time of year can it be used?

In New Zealand you can apply the gel at any time but the effectiveness of Cut'n'Paste Picloram might be reduced a bit in the colder months.

How many weeds (stems) can I treat from one 450ml bottle of Cut'n'Paste Picloram?

You should be able to apply to around 240-250 cut stems assuming the diameter of the stem is around 25mm and you are applying a layer of gel around 4-5mm thick.

Can I apply Cut'n'Paste Picloram Gel when it's raining?

Not recommended for a number of reasons.  Ideally you should not apply when there is risk of rain within 12-18 hours.  Ideally longer to give the herbicide gel a chance to be absorbed.  Also if it rains you run the risk of the gel being washed off onto non-target plants.

Is Cut'n'Paste Piclroam safe around children and pets?

The relatively small amount of active ingredient together with the relatively low toxicity and the small amount being applied to each stem means the product is generally pretty safe but it is still a harmful chemical and must be kept away from children.  Especially in the bottle.  

Is Cut'n'Paste Picloram safe around other plants?

Because you are applying directly to the weed you want to kill there is no spray drift but if you spill small amounts of the gel on non-target plants then they can be damaged.  This is the big advantage the Cut'n'Paste Gels though in that you can kill weeds easily without harming other plants and natives.

How often should I replace the brush?

Normally the brush will start to wear out between 5-7 applications so if you are refilling from 5L packs then it is a good idea to buy two brush sets every time you buy a 5L refill pack.  

Are there any Cut'n'Paste Picloram residues left in the soil?

Because you are applying to the plant directly there is generally no soil residues.  However any product that does drop onto the ground will stay active in the soil for a number of months and could potentially move into the roots of non-target plants.
