Catsear
Hypochoeris radicata
DESCRIPTION
This is like dandelion-style weeds, growing from a fairly flat rosette and producing yellow flowers on erect stems. So it’s not surprising that they are regularly confused with each other.

HERBICIDES TO CONTROL CATSEAR
Catsear is susceptible to most common general-purpose herbicides, but selective control is difficult without causing clover damage.
Non-selective Herbicides to kill Catsear in pasture
- Granny Herbicide granulated glyphosate at 1.3-2.2kg/Ha, or
- G-360 GLYPHOSATE 360g/L at 3-5L/Ha, or
- G-360 GLYPHOSATE 450g/L at 2.4-4L/Ha
for spraying out infested pasture. Use the higher rate where there are a lot of flat weeds present.
Selective Herbicides to Control Catsear in pasture
- GrassMate at 2L/Ha for area spraying, or at 60ml/10L for spot spraying. Note: this spray will severely damage clovers.
- Rainbow & Brown MCPA750 at 2-3L in 200-300L water per Ha for control of seedling flat weeds in pasture and young turf. This spray may cause some temporary clover suppression.
- Dicamba 500 Select - 100ml plus 260ml Rainbow & Brown MCPA750 in 100L water per hectare.
- Ralid at 1.5L/Ha for boom/area spraying, 150ml/100L water for high volume spot spraying, or for knapsack sprayers use 35ml/10L water.
- WHACK – 2,4-D 800 this needs to be applied at 536g/100L covering an area between 250m2 to just over 300m2
In all cases better control will result from the addition of SprayWetter penetrant to the spray mix at 100-200ml per 100L water.
Selective Herbicides to Kill Catsear in lawn and turf / non-cropland areas
- Dicamba 500 Select – use 800ml plus 1.5L of Rainbow & Brown MCPA750 in 150-200L water per hectare. This will kill clover.
- Apply a small amount of Cut'n'Paste Original to the centre of each weed you want to kill. Or apply to several leaves of any problem grass. Leave it to die off. Browning off will usually occur within 7-10 days
Non-Selective Herbicides to Kill Catsear in lawn and turf / non-cropland areas
- TERBGUARD 500 – Broadcast application at 15-19L/ha in 150 – 300L water. Add G-360 GLYPHOSATE, G-540 GLYPHOSATE or Granny Herbicide at the recommended label rates to control deep rooted perennial weeds.
